Speaking from my personal experience as an American living in Panama since 2007, I have noticed a few common reasons why Americans end up leaving this vibrant country. As someone who has been married to a Panamanian and has three children, I have seen firsthand how the distance from family can be a significant factor in the decision to leave Panama.
Reason number one: the distance. As people start to get older, they often feel a pull back to their homeland, especially if they have grandchildren they want to be closer to. Panama may be relatively close to the United States, with direct flights from major cities like Houston and Miami taking only a few hours, but for some, even this distance can feel too far away. The desire to be near family and loved ones can outweigh the benefits of living in Panama.
Reason number two: the culture. While I personally find Panamanian culture to be welcoming and open, not everyone feels the same way. Panamanians are generally friendly and hospitable, but there are cultural idiosyncrasies that can be challenging for some people. For example, the laid-back attitude towards time can be frustrating for those used to a more punctual approach. Similarly, navigating bureaucratic processes like obtaining a cell phone or setting up utilities can be a frustrating experience due to long wait times and language barriers.
Despite the hurdles, many expats find that the warmth and hospitality of the Panamanian people make up for these challenges. However, for some Americans, the cost of living in Panama can be a deciding factor in their decision to leave. While it’s true that certain things in Panama can be more affordable compared to the United States, such as healthcare and transportation, other expenses like groceries and housing can add up quickly.
Ultimately, the decision to leave Panama is a personal one that depends on individual circumstances and priorities. Whether it’s a longing to be closer to family, difficulty adjusting to the cultural differences, or financial considerations, Americans have their own reasons for choosing to stay or leave this beautiful country. As someone who has made Panama my home for over a decade, I have come to appreciate the unique blend of cultures and experiences that this country has to offer. While it may not be the right fit for everyone, Panama will always hold a special place in my heart.
